★ ★ ★ ★ ★ metro system began in 1950. As the city added lines both above and below ground, the Stockholm metro designers encouraged distinct décor at each station. Rådhuset station is one of several where the bedrock was left exposed, giving the stop a cavernlike feel. The Stockholm metro is also sometimes called the ‘longest art gallery in the world.’ The vast majority of stations in the line feature artwork—including carved rock formations, sculptures, paintings, and engravings—embellishing the daily commute of upwards of a million daily riders.
