Sakanaya - Södra Vallgatan 3

I’ll change my review from 5 stars to 2 stars. I’ve been ordering food from Sakanaya for a while and I noticed that they recently started replacing fish with avocado and aburaage. And wasabi is fake now, to reduce the cost I assume. I’m disappointed :(

Good sushi. Better than "standard sushi" in Sweden. The fish:rice ratio is good, i.e. the rice is smaller than other places. 15pcs wasn't hard to eat. Well cooked, well seasoned rice and well made. The fishes on top had good quality too.

I ordered through Foodora on March 25th 2022. I ordered the karaage don, tempura don, and the chirashi. I’ve lived a year in Tokyo and know what’s authentic Japanese, what’s good Japanese, what’s westernised Japanese, and what’s just plain wrong. The sashimi on the chirashi was not cut properly and was mostly tasteless. The soy sauce was so diluted (i’m guessing with water and lemon juice?) that it was almost transparent. No wasabi was provided. No ginger. The rice seemed not to have been rinced properly, because it was wet and agglutinated. The karaage was basically square cubes of chicken in a soggy crust. The bowl came with warm, basmati-like rice (really wrong) and mixed vegetables, including brocoli, carrots and bell peppers (paprika). These vegetables are never seen on a karaage don, and in addition to being wrong, they were tasteless. Same mistakes for the tempura don. Both had been packed and sealed in delivery bowls with hot rice which probably degraded the fried crust with steam. Don’t serve tempura or karaage on hot rice in a container. Serve the rice aside!! I paid 400 SEK, incl. 20% off coupon, and delivery fee. I feel extremely cheated. Given the pictures from other customers in-store, I think either the chefs are inconsistent, or the delivery packaging is not thought through, or the restaurant is just plain bad. Or all three. I’ve tried 15+ sushi / poke / Japanese restaurants in Malmö, and this one is the worst so far…

A really good and cozy one. Tried their flamable sushi, bento box, lax teriyaki and tempura.. and all were prepared nicely and with care(at least it tasted so).

Great sushi and Japanese food. The staff have always been very kind, even when my little one was throwing a tantrum. Highly recommended to all sushi lovers.

Highly recommend the sushi! Searching for sushi to celebrate my birthday and these sushi were definitely the most Japanese-looking sushi if you have been to Japan. Worth to wait for a bit long time for these sushi if you miss Japanese cuisine and want some proper sushi.

Really good quality sushi. The staff were very friendly and the presentation was beautiful. Really happy with my visit to this place.

Update: Lowering the stars now to 3 because of the uneven quality. Last time the rice was basically wet and I wouldn't go to a place with that quality if it so cost 80sek. And they normally charge 159 for this? Like not ok. I really hope they can get the good standard in all the chefs soon. At location : Walked past it, and seeing no people inside (they also have outdoors seating) I decided it was safe during this Corona time, today to sit there. The waitress is incredibly friendly and you can tell that this (apparently they have different who does it their own way) sushi chef is very passionate. Very nice music, more on the relaxing side. Seats look very luxurious but I had some issues deciding on a seat since I'm very short and ended up picking a chair instead of the sofa. Food was very fresh again. I love how they don't drown their Maki in sesame seeds. The view is perfect and I believe this would be a perfect restaurant to go on a date at in the late afternoon during the summer. Sushi: Ordered home with ubereats. The nigiri is very fresh and different from other places with their flavor thingies on the top. Lemonzest amongst other things. The fish felt very fresh and didn't have any "smell". Felt high end. But the maki wasn't the best. The nori tastes like it has some oil on it (or are rolled with it) and that always reminds me of korean kimbap (which I dislike). The nori also doesn't go all around, are they made with a mold? Because of this if you don't pick them up carefully there's a risk they will fall apart. Price is quite steep, it would be understandble if only the maki was better. I've eaten sushi around the globe and this is a good place, but not the best (even in Malmö, for me that is Sakura sushi in West harbor) Don Katsu: Ordered home. Finally asian true flavors and not some fusion like a lot of places have in Sweden. I haven't had don Katsu in japan but in japanese restaurants in Korea so I can't really say much about it's authenticity but i did recognized the flavor base from Korean japanese restaurants. It was good. I would prefer a bit more sauce with slightly less sourness. In Korea they always put some white thin dressing on the cabbage, not sure if they have it anywhere in japan, but I miss it. I absolutely love how much cooked vegetables are close to the rice, it elevates the flavors. Rice was well cooked (just a small spoon was soggy) and the meat was also good, after Corona I will definitely go there and try it because it lost a bit of heat and crunch in the transport. Tori karaage(otctober 21): I'm very disappointed today!! The pieces are too big, too dry. Rice was too hard. No, just no. Super disappointed. The quality is so different from the last time I had it. Would I recommend it? Yes! Price, a bit in the steep end but looking at the location and compare it seems very reasonable. Their deducted prices on ordering home should still be made permanent I think since the price feels that high due to the location. I personally would be more okay at the warm dishes being - 40sek. But then again all of Sweden is extremely overpriced in the food business.
